Title: Declaration of Independence Description: Declaration of Independence printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by John Dunlap, official printer for the Continental Congress. Approximately 100 of these broadsides were printed on the night of July 4-5, 1776, after the Continental Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence. The committee appointed to draft the Declaration (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman) took a handwritten version, primarily the work of Jefferson, to the shop of John Dunlap to be printed. The broadsides were sent to various assemblies, conventions, committees of safety, and commanding officers of Continental troops throughout the country to be read to the populace.
