Title: View of New Orleans taken from the Plantation of Marigny Description: View of New Orleans taken from the Plantation of Marigny. Oil on canvas. Text reads, "Under my wings, every thing prospers." In 1801, Louisiana was retroceded by Spain to France, but the colonists were not informed until March 1802. On April 30, 1803, France sold Louisiana to the United States. However, it was not until November 30, 1803, that Spain transferred Louisiana to France. On December 20, 1803, Louisiana was ceremoniously transferred to the United States. The American flag is shown in this painting probably because certain American merchants had "rights of deposit" in New Orleans and were permitted to fly the American flag over their property.
