Broadside notice The Union is Dissolved!, December 20, 1860, from the Charleston Mercury newspaper. An extra edition of the Charleston Mercury announced the stunning news of South Carolina's secession from the Union. Rebel leaders mailed a copy of the broadside to president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who was in Springfield waiting for the March inauguration.
