buffalo in illinois

Buffalo grazing on a field in Palos Township, Illinois, circa 1924-1928. In 1924, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County brought buffalo into its Palos District at a location later called Buffalo Woods, near the northwest corner of 87th Street and Kean Avenue. After buffalo escaped from their compound several times, the president of the Forest Preserve board authorized citizens to shoot strays. Eventually the buffalo were moved to Lincoln Park Zoo.
